Meaning of the forms(poomsae) in Taekwondo
Tae-geuk il Jang 8th Gup
First poomsae (form) usually start practicing it from yellow belt , it represents the Keon which means book of changes , it symbolizes heaven and light and has 18 movements. Gup 8
Tae-geuk ee Jang 7th Gup
By the second poomsae, a student should be used to the front stance , and the walking stance, these are the most easiest of them all. IE walking stance and front stance. This form symbolizes joyfulness and has 18 movments. Gup 7
Tae-geuk Sam Jang 6th Gup
This introduces new movements , like the back stances , bu this stage the student should be proficient in easy kicks like the front kick. It symbolizes fire and the sun and has 20 movements Gup 6
Tae-geuk Sa Jang 5th Gup
This form symbolizes thunder and lightening, and has 20 movements. I don’t have to say too much about thunder and lightening. it strikes fear in an opponent. Gup 5
Tae-geuk oh Jang 4th Gup
This form symbolizes the wind, the wind is strong and invisible, also introduces a few new kicks like the side kicks. This has 20 movements . Gup 4
Tae-geuk yook Jang 3rd Gup
This symbolizes water, Like the legendary Bruce Lee , said water is strong yet calm and becomes and takes the shape of everything it is into. This has 23 movements Gup 3
Tae-geuk Chill Jang 2nd Gup
This introduces a stance called the tiger stance, and represents a character of confidence. It symbolizes the mountain and has 25 movements. Gup 2
Tae-geuk pal Jang 1st Gup
The Last in the basic form before one steps into the black belt world. This is a bit complex but by the time a student gets here , they are well equipped to be here . Symbolizes earth and has 24 movements. Gup 1
White Belt
This is the first step, This is where the student must first learn to stand, walk. This is where the student is being introduced to taekwondo or martial arts for that matter. For this, the students attempt the most basic of techniques. Some of them include low block, high block middle block, front kick and attempts at the ax kick.
Yellow Belt
Now this the first promotion test in his/journey, improvement of the basic techniques learned is a must, low block, high block, middle block, middle punch, front kick, front snap kick and again attempts at the ax kick.
Orange Belt
At this stage, the student is comfortable with standing, walking, and some basic stances. Improvements of the basic techniques are needed and a few news ones, middle punch, high punch, low punch, middle block, high block, front snap kick, attempts at the ax kick and a new kick which might be one of the most famous, roundhouse kick.
Green Belt
Very important stage in taekwondo, improvements and new hand techniques and footwork come with the green belt, this is where the student learns the knife hand strikes , various hand strikes, front snap kick, attempts at the roundhouse kick, and the ax kick, attempts at combination kicking.this is the first introduction to double punch.
